<div>
<i>I can't promise this post won't be pointless.</i></div>

When you're going somewhere with no specific destination in mind, suddenly random things start looking interesting and sometimes, you really do find interesting places.</div>

<br />
Today was one of those days where I felt like a little kid again. ...<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I visited Chateau Kefraya a few weeks ago during one of those crazy weather days when it suddenly starts raining on your sunglasses. The road to Kefraya is spectacular. Once you take a right from Chtaura, it's a 20 minutes drive, with trees aligned on the both sides of the road. Basically you're driving between the beautiful chain of east and west mountains of Lebanon, in a green land.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrhkWLqrxnl-E4_HO87X9ZwDlr2nOoNkhEYvRUAbMVSFJYAZHMaQLA8lz1Ljeb2Di1uWSfUKPbo6v_NZI9KloT5VWAveOL19ILuL4sBIBQvz572J-V7S1B8MQs4yiu5g5PFiGi-FwGCJM/s1600/IMG_2762.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrhkWLqrxnl-E4_HO87X9ZwDlr2nOoNkhEYvRUAbMVSFJYAZHMaQLA8lz1Ljeb2Di1uWSfUKPbo6v_NZI9KloT5VWAveOL19ILuL4sBIBQvz572J-V7S1B8MQs4yiu5g5PFiGi-FwGCJM/s200/IMG_2762.JPG" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtIdCQIPy05p8dOGp6jaBxSHh3qzMefh2GHVPQwo7Azr8yrRvtOg2WUwqFMAv1zzSV9_ReV_vELEETQmDRUpPBT_2fyu1Yw-Rh1LbOllUhm6d1Q-E7mW9e3tvDbCBQYOvLqsOPk4Tl-Vk/s1600/IMG_2765.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtIdCQIPy05p8dOGp6jaBxSHh3qzMefh2GHVPQwo7Azr8yrRvtOg2WUwqFMAv1zzSV9_ReV_vELEETQmDRUpPBT_2fyu1Yw-Rh1LbOllUhm6d1Q-E7mW9e3tvDbCBQYOvLqsOPk4Tl-Vk/s200/IMG_2765.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
We took a few wrong turns first, before reaching the chateau - not that I'm complaining, everything was beautiful - and eventually reached the place. After parking and checking the tours, we took the two tours they have.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR2Zqe3xnNCQN1YMDqNc5qrTSry6wEGrPZm1uE32H827gPFvy4Z_rN9dqAG16tKOwEPEA0Aqs76eml6dXrB9MEF4Ix3vxS1hNAqFaiR9KwBxfZuVMmggs-vjcLtcJHChGkBSqFQF7Vp_c/s1600/IMG_0968.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR2Zqe3xnNCQN1YMDqNc5qrTSry6wEGrPZm1uE32H827gPFvy4Z_rN9dqAG16tKOwEPEA0Aqs76eml6dXrB9MEF4Ix3vxS1hNAqFaiR9KwBxfZuVMmggs-vjcLtcJHChGkBSqFQF7Vp_c/s320/IMG_0968.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
One of them was a "train" tour in the vineyards, which was kind of long with no one explaining anything. We stopped at some point to see the old Roman graves, but it started to rain so we had to run back in the train (which was leaking). The colors of autumn were so amazing though.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
The other one was a tour of the wine cellars they have. First we watched a short boring documentary, then we had someone touring us explaining how the different wines are made and the whole process it takes. Apparently it takes 2 whole years for red wine to be made, that's why the most recent red wine found on the market now is 2010!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwxDFhaBILO8cL7RslhX7N_7JXjImkC6usVo_jJYaI__V6ENuDLl0p5vhRpDo9qEkrmSsTeiJUEDQQdj0cqvO11XrUNdWLjdma5CCV5-gjp1AaO81Km-8DKc4uaNjyJBEWuonjbKlryMs/s1600/IMG_2784.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwxDFhaBILO8cL7RslhX7N_7JXjImkC6usVo_jJYaI__V6ENuDLl0p5vhRpDo9qEkrmSsTeiJUEDQQdj0cqvO11XrUNdWLjdma5CCV5-gjp1AaO81Km-8DKc4uaNjyJBEWuonjbKlryMs/s320/IMG_2784.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then we went to the wine tasting area and we got a bottle of my new favorite red wine! The staff were very helpful and friendly. We had lunch there and I love the food they have. The restaurant is really cozy with a great view outside, good food and reasonable prices.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvmM_Wl99RzG58dtRNR_e2wlHlazNEKKkCRsAe89wQJFVwY30-3_jKz6VvOcfyiPxq-cO5Vz7_bi5Sjcudnz-iqGZPL2UQUsxxd1nugbm6O6XQSMPikgCVNHd_PxUDdN17oDof6B4OVcQ/s1600/IMG_2821.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvmM_Wl99RzG58dtRNR_e2wlHlazNEKKkCRsAe89wQJFVwY30-3_jKz6VvOcfyiPxq-cO5Vz7_bi5Sjcudnz-iqGZPL2UQUsxxd1nugbm6O6XQSMPikgCVNHd_PxUDdN17oDof6B4OVcQ/s320/IMG_2821.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Overall, you can plan a whole day trip there, make sure it's not rainy though. You'll feel like a tourist.<br />
<br />

Meaning all the rivers and waterfalls are in action! Also, the temperatures are rising and we are crawling out of our shelters.<br />
<br />
So this is what I keep wondering. How come in Lebanon everything is about Beirut? And not just that, but why is everything about "which restaurant to go to" or "where to go drinking". Wasting a sunny day to go to a mall is just... wrong!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://sarineavakian.blogspot.com/2012/09/birthday-camping-and-balou-balaa.html" target="_blank">This</a> and <a href="http://sarineavakian.blogspot.com/2012/09/afqa.html" target="_blank">this</a> are two must see places this season by the way (because... waterfalls!)<br />
<br />
I've been trying to discover some "new" spots and here's one. Jahlieh is located in Shouf and there's a river, a small waterfall and a very nice drive.<br />

3 reasons to visit<br />
1. We were wearing jackets and some people were swimming. It's that tempting.<br />
2. Everything is so green and not crowded.<br />
3. It's a great place for hiking<br />

If you need a getaway, I know what you should do: get your best friend/partner, grab a bottle and drive out of the city at night.<br />

That's what I did today. My boyfriend and I drove for about an hour, until we reached a place with no light pollution and since there was no moon in the sky tonight, it meant lots of stars. I tried to take a picture and this was the best I could do<br />

All you have to do is look up and you will have a whole new world in front of you. You'll see millions of stars, from faint to really shiny ones, you'll see constellations, nebulae, feel the earth's rotation and if you sit long enough, you'll catch a few meteors.<br />
<br />
It makes you ask questions you've never asked before and see things from a different perspective (check <a href="http://conservationreport.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/the-size-of-our-world.jpeg" target="_blank">this</a>). When Voyager 1 was about to exit the solar system in 1990, it took one last picture of the earth 6.5 billion kilometers away. The plan was Balou Balaa, where my friends camped 2 years ago and I couldn't wait to go there myself. After getting stuck in a lot of traffic on the way to Batroun, we finally took the highway to Tannourine where slowly everything started turning green and the weather changed. Once we reached, we carried all our stuff about 15 minutes downhill, only to find out camping is forbidden there because it's a reserve... Sooo we had to crawl back up carrying everything and had to come up with a plan B. The municipal police showed us a place 2 minutes away, right next to a dry river (I'm getting a lot of those dry places lately) with a camping site...<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">No camping, no littering, no loud noises<br />

...and so it began, setting up the tents, collecting wood and making fire. The whole day was cloudy and foggy everywhere, but after sunset they disappeared and we were left with a starry night. The temperature dropped to 10°C and the feeling of being around the fire with friends and away from home was the best; humidity on the other hand, wasn't. Not only we were looking like <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghREgH3Te6JNQFwzOIWV1xkhkv58bfIZAghePUkdgmZCHpbiGMjIQQFOVnTHv001HFPdS_-ZmbVEDxH9qvIPTvkk9XuAKVkEC5103Kym4H-mskY2enfMr1xYUyoo4n_IRdYve2H412we8/s1600/Monica-and-Chandler-The-One-in-Barbados-Part-Two-9-24-monica-and-chandler-9623739-720-480.jpg" target="_blank">this</a>, everything looked like it's wet, to a point where 2 of my friends couldn't sleep at night, because water was dripping in their tent.

After breakfast a few of us went to Balaa again. It's a 250 meter deep natural sink hole with an amazing waterfall during the snow melting season and it has 3 natural overlapping bridges, made over the course of millions of years. Mostly, there were people rappelling (Must try that sometime!) and some like us, just there to see the place and take pictures. After getting back to the campsite and more lazying, it was time to pack and leave, getting stuck in traffic on the way back again.

So this week I finally got to go to this place I had in mind for a long time now, to the source of <a href="http://sarineavakian.blogspot.com/2012/09/a-day-off.html" target="_blank">Nahr Ibrahim</a>.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>Afqa is the sacred source of the Adonis River (modern Nahr Ibrahim), where the waters emerge from a huge grotto in a cliff 200 meters high. It is here that the myth of Venus and Adonis was born. The story goes that while out hunting, Adonis was killed by a wild boar. Venus (the Phoenician goddess Astarte), who was his lover, tried to save him but she was too late. And so it is the blood of Adonis that each spring turns the torrential river to red (<a href="http://www.ikamalebanon.com/eco_tourism/mount_et/mount_cities_et/afqa.htm" target="_blank">source</a>)</i></span><br />
<br />

<br />
Once we reached, we first went to the upper part where water was flowing from a cave. There was nothing much to see here, since it's the end of summer, meaning the driest season and a not-so-impressive waterfall.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Being against the idea of having to spend a lot of money to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, we decided to find places in nature and just relax, which was a problem, because there are no places in nature that are free in Lebanon! Anyway, we ended up going to Nahr Ibrahim and finding this place we could go down and be by the river. We parked, got down and were greeted by this...<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3KhYpFbg4SA75In1nLbZSGzZBGTHSuqhseQ_sc2M1Z3ZCdDztKpGclVsJS3_GcEZzyJZbzzlCLbO1u07qyz1rQ6IPVy5gc6m6cNouxKHbIEU285LoLD0F7bL3BA4UvFlYp94ABm112yg/s1600/IMG_1624.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3KhYpFbg4SA75In1nLbZSGzZBGTHSuqhseQ_sc2M1Z3ZCdDztKpGclVsJS3_GcEZzyJZbzzlCLbO1u07qyz1rQ6IPVy5gc6m6cNouxKHbIEU285LoLD0F7bL3BA4UvFlYp94ABm112yg/s400/IMG_1624.JPG" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Helloooo Lebanon!<br />
<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
...which reminds me why we're better off not having free access to places... I don't get why people have to throw their garbage around, I mean just like you carried them down and used them, carry them back up and throw them where you're supposed to. I swear, no effort! Once we passed there and reached where obviously not a lot of humans have, the view was amazing. Being in a green valley with the river flowing was the kind of place we had in mind.<br />

I was really excited until i felt seasick and the medicine wouldn't really help (it's like I'm immune to all nausea medicines)... I get carsick, seasick, even fun-sick in amusement parks. Anyway, getting away from the coastline into the sea, then the quiet and the sun were enough reasons for getting out of bed early. I know some people for who a fishing trip is all about relaxing and clearing the mind, though I thought it needs a lot of patience and a little frustration (and sickness) lol.<br />
